“Dreams really can come true but they are most often the result of hard work, determination and persistence” - Jason Blume
I set up Raw Talent because I remember how difficult and scary it was being a high school student trying to get information and advice about moving into the professional performance world. I had no idea where to go for professional training without having to move to London. Everything seemed so out of reach and elitist. How could a wee lass from Rosyth and Dalgety Bay get further than the local youth theatre? No-one knew.
The Equity Card was a pipe-dream, Spotlight was the golden book I could never get into and getting an agent…don’t be silly!
How great would it have been for me as that high school kid to have made a visit to one company who could have told me everything I could possibly want to know about the industry, how to move forward in my career, how to get an Equity card and an agent? How great if that company were then available at the end of a phone or email to offer me or my parents practical advice in an honest, open and supportive environment? How great would it have been if that company could also offer part-time, practical training and coaching that didn’t break the bank but would help me build my confidence and skills, without the ridiculous promises of fame and fortune? How great if that company could potentially offer me work as an actor by producing films and creating theatre?
I’d have loved finding that company and would have felt empowered to help myself but it didn’t seem to exist so…I set it up!
- that’s why most of my students come back for more
- that’s why many of my students move on to full time acting study
- that’s why 100% of my students would recommend our workshops and classes to others
- that's why I get glowing references from all the non-acting clients I work with - from working with disadvantaged children on film projects for outreach charities, to writing drama resources for the Scottish Government.
I still work as an actor, singer and producer and am also the elected Secretary and Vice Chair of the East of Scotland Branch of Equity - yep that same Union that felt totally out of my reach when I was 17!
I’ve always thought that if you believe in yourself and don’t lose sight of your roots, remain patient and courteous and stay true to your morals, you’ll eventually get the long awaited break to do what you love and get paid for it. Stick in there.
